The song, Let There Be Peace on Earth,
is not really a Christmas only song, but it shows up on several Christmas
CDs. And, this is the season of peace on
earth, so it’s appropriate.
“Let
me walk with my brother
In
perfect harmony.”
Some of the more recent artists
performing this song will substitute “family” for “brother.” That change does make the song more
meaningful for many.
The line “perfect harmony” is a meaty
phrase. If you went to a choral concert,
and the entire program was sung in unison, no matter how talented the singers
and beautiful the song, it would get boring after a (short) while.
But, if the chorus sings in harmony –
several voices singing different notes, but pleasant to the ear – it is much more
pleasant to hear. Reminds me of another
song – not Christmasy at all – All God’s Critters Got a Voice in the Choir:
All
God's critters got a place in the choir
Some sing low and some sing higher,
Some sing out loud on a telephone wire,
Some just clap their hands, or paws, or anything they've got now.
Some sing low and some sing higher,
Some sing out loud on a telephone wire,
Some just clap their hands, or paws, or anything they've got now.
Life would be pretty boring, too, if we
all sang the same note. Different notes,
sung in respect to the other notes, create a beautiful “perfect harmony.”
Back to the song, which tells us it is,
in fact, up to us:
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.
Nothing more for me to add……
